KAY HAPPEL
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR 2007 AWARD

This person could fit into the volunteer or construction volunteer category because she has been so proficient at both. The 2007 Volunteer of the Year Award goes to Kay Happel.

Kay worked as part of a tag team with a former recipient of the Construction Volunteer of the Year Award, Mary Hovik, on this the third Women Build project. They ensured that at least one of them were there on build days (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays). Most of us could not come out each and every day, but this team always did, even when no one else showed up. Kay is a dedicated volunteer who came out when she said she would, and gave notice if she could not be there. If neither of them were there, there wasn't much the rest of us could do without their guidance. All of the homeowners that have benefited from her work have developed a special affection for her. Kay is a warm and caring person, and provides input to homeowners and volunteers on a personal level.  Our WBIII homeowner was very fond of Kay, and appreciative of life tips she would share. She provided guiding principles to help them be successful in life.

Kay has very good home building skills, and is a teacher who willingly shares that knowledge with others, she has an enormous amount of talent. Tag teaming with Mary proved beneficial in that what one person did not know the other one did. They each have their strengths, solid work ethics, and determination to get things done on time. Kay is conscientious in her work, and won't settle for any task, not matter how minor, to be sub-optimal. Perfection is the key.

Many women have learned solid skills from Kay. They can transfer those skills either in their own homes, or hopefully, when they come out to volunteer again.

Kay earned an honorary seat on the WBIII Steering Committee, because both she and Mary always knew what was going on at the site, in addition to having insight from previous Women Builds. Kay was always a welcome addition to our monthly committee meetings at Checker's.

With grateful appreciation of all of her hard work, diligence and attention to detail, we are honored to present to Kay Happel, the 2007 Volunteer of the Year Award.

CONGRATULATIONS!
